Study identifies relationship between thyroid problem and suicidal tendency

The Archives of Clinical Psychiatry, published by the Department of Psychiatry of the Medical School of USP (USP), made available in its first edition of 2018 (volume 45, number 1 2018), article on hormonal changes occurring in suicidal patients.

The study compared the attempts of the act in patients with a history of suicidal thoughts and in people who never had any thought or suicidal attitude. It was noticed that some people in the first group presented with a malfunction of the thyroid, supposing a relation of these factors.

The research was conducted at the Punjab Mental Health Institute and the Mayo Hospital Nuclear Medicine Center in Lahore, both in Pakistan, and sought a possible association of thyroid malfunction with suicide attempts. Patients with a history of suicide attempt or current suicidal ideation were selected to analyze the state of thyroid function (age between 15 and 55 years). The results showed that suicidal patients had a higher incidence of thyroid disorder and a lower level of T3 compared with non-suicidal psychiatric patients.
