News form the Secretary-Treasurer
Dear LATS members:
The Latin American Thyroid Society (LATS) has grown very much in the recent years and I'm very proud to act as the Secretary-Treasurer from the Society, knowing the coming challenges thatt we have to address the next years. The last LATS Meeting in Rio de Janeiro was an excellent moment for scientific and social activities for the Society members. In 2003 our LATS Meeting will be held in Cordoba and we are proud that Buenos Aires will be the venue of the 13th International Thyroid Congress, a joint meeting of the four sister societies: ATA, AOTA, ETA and LATS. To maintain our members informed in a more regular basis, we are sending every month an "e-mail newsletter", with the last important LATS news, in addition to the informations updated at our LATS site. I hope that we will be able to communicate more and better through this "e-mail newsletter".

Message from Dra. Carmem Pazos de Moura , Chairman of the IX LATS
Organizing Committee
The IX LATS Congress was held from April 28 to May 1, 2001 at the Sofitel Hotel at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There were 606 participants. The meeting was preceded by one Satellite Symposium on the 'Surgical management of thyroid carcinoma", that occurred in the morning of April 28. The Scientific Committee, led by Dr. Aldo Coleoni, organized an outstanding Scientific Program, consisting in Conferences, Symposia, Workshops, Meet-the Professor Sessions, as well as the presentation of original communications in Poster or Oral Sessions.
Seven invited international speakers from Europe and United States and 39 speakers from Latin America discussed the most up-to-date issues in the Thyroid field. In keeping with the continuous growth of Thyroid scientific activity in Latin America, the number of abstracts presented at the meeting was 174. Twelve of those were chosen as candidates for the Merck Young LATS Investigator and were presented in Oral Sessions. At Poster Sessions , the authors could debate their results with colleagues as well as with experts in the field, the Poster Discussion Leaders. During the three days of Poster Sessions, we had the contribution of 32 Discussion Leaders.
The organizers of the event thank the finantial support of Sponsors and Exhibitors, from pharmaceutical companies, especially those involved with thyroid products, diagnostic laboratories and Brazilians Federal Agencies:
CAPES and CNPq.
The IX LATS Congress succeeded in strengthening scientific interchange among
LATS members, as well as in contributing to the enrichment of those interested in the Thyroid and its Hormones.

Message from Dr. Guillermo Juvenal, regarding Argentine CNEA
Our Institution, the National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA), is going through a very difficult time. The reduction in the 2002 budget for salaries would involve making 500 employees (approximately one third of the staff) of our Institution redundant. We would be grateful if you were willing to write a letter in support of the research workers of CNEA. We would submit your letter and that of other researchers of international prestige to the authorities, in support of a request for reconsideration of these measures.
For your reference we can describe CNEA as a national and regional top level scientific-technological institution associated to other institutions such as hospitals for specific activities, i.e. nuclear medicine among others. CNEA has conducted major scientific-technological projects that have allowed us to export technology. It addresses issues in a wide variety of areas:
assistance to nuclear reactors, development of nuclear fuel for power and research reactors, development of reactors (research reactors have been exported to Perú, Argelia, Egypt and now Australia), assistance to the Industry, nuclear medicine and radioisotopes (CNEA produces 10% of the Cobalt 60 for industrial and medical use worldwide), radiotherapy, solar energy (development of cells for satellites), protection of the environment, research and development in chemistry, materials, physics and biology.
In the area of biology and radiobiology CNEA contributes significantly to improve the quality of life. Multidisciplinary groups perform studies on the effect of radiation on living organisms, radioisotopes, prevention of radioinduced injury and application of these techniques and knowledge to the diagnosis and treatment of different pathologies. Furthermore, professionals and technicians perform certain services for the community. Our Institution is actively involved in the formation of highly specialized professionals and technicians who participate in its programs and attend its Institutes that are associated to National Universities. Thise experience and knowledge are subsequently transferred to other institutions.
Thanking you in advance for considering our proposal. If you are willing to write a letter in support of CNEA we would be grateful if you could fax it to 54 11 6772 7121 to the attention of Dr. Guillermo Juvenal.
Guillermo Juvenal
