LATS. Election

Dear LATS Members, We are glad to contact you to share some good news regarding the activities of the Society. It is a great pleasure to let you know that our XIV LATS meeting held in Lima, Peru, has been highly successful. We were very happy to meet most of you in Lima. The total number of registered participants was 634 (Argentina 61, Bolivia 2, Brazil 471, Chile 14, Colombia 4, Cuba 2, Ecuador 1, Honduras 2, Italy 1, Mexico 8, Nigeria 7, Panama 1, Paraguay 4, Peru 28, Dominican Republic 16, Spain 1, United States 4, Uruguay 2, Venezuela 5). There was a notable participation of young researchers in the diverse topics. We are very grateful to the Local Organizing Committee coordinated by its chairman, Dr. Eduardo Pretell with the collaboration of Dr. Eduardo K. Tomimori and to the Scientific Committee, chaired by Dr. Marcos Abalovich, for their dedication and hard work. We are proud to highlight that the winner of the LATS Prize 2011 at the XIV LATS meeting was Dr. Laura Sterian Ward, from Departamento de Clínica Médica da Faculdade de Ciências da Unicamp, Laboratório de Genética Molecular do Cancêr , Campinas, Brazil. It is also with great satisfaction that we announce that the LATS Young Investigator Prize (Merck Prize) was awarded to the best Basic and Clinical works based on the quality of the paper and its presentation. Both, Basic and Clinical prizes were shared by 2 Young Investigators. The winners of the Young Investigator Prize are: Basic: Magalí Nazar (Córdoba, Argentina) for the work: "A novel mechanism in the regulation of thyroid peroxidase expression involving the NF-kB transcription factor". (Coauthors: Nicola JP, Pellizas CG, Masini-Repiso AM) Paula Bargi de Souza (São Paulo, Brazil) for the work: "Acute T3-treatment alters the TSH granule distribution: a putative non-genomic action preventing TSH secretion?" (Coauthors: Bargi-Souza P, Romano RM, Salgado RM, Silva FG, Brunetto EL, Nunes MT) Clinic: Mirian Romitti (Porto Alegre, Brazil) for the work: "Type 3 deiodinase expression in papillary thyroid carcinoma is associated with tumor aggressiveness and modulated by BRAFv600e mutation" (Coauthors: Zennig N, Bueno AL, Meyer ELS, Wajner SM, Maia AL) Andre Uchimura Bastos (São Paulo, Brazil) for the work: "Molecular analysis of papillary thyroid carcinomas reveals diverse transcriptoma signature of tumors with BRAFv600e or Ret/PTC and the identification of tumors with dual mutations". (Coauthors: Oler G, Hemerly J, Cerutti JM)) As you know, the election process of LATS Society Offices has changed since the LATS Assembly in Gramado, 2009, from a proposal of Dr. Ana Luiza Maia. A remote-voting system (internet voting) installed in the LATS website was used for LATS Election to facilitate voting to members of all Latin American countries. Voter privacy was protected and the integrity of the results guaranteed. The electoral process took place in an organized and ordered way. We would like to inform you that LATS web page has been updated with the LATS Executive Committee that resulted elected for the period 2011-2013 and with the Scientific Committee (2011-2013) designed by the new LATS Executive Committee. We would like to remind you on the foundation of the World Thyroid Federation (WTF) during the 14th International Thyroid Congress (14th ITC) held in Paris, France, September, 2010. You can find a good commentary on the aims of the WTF in Thyroid 21 (4):333, 2011, and more information about the founding of the WTF in the notice published in the same issue of this journal, pages 461-463. The next meeting of the WTF Executive Committee, composed by the Presidents and Secretaries of the 4 sister societies, American Thyroid Association (ATA), European Thyroid Association (ETA), Asia-Oceania Thyroid Association (AOTA), and LATS will be held during the 35th Meeting of the European Thyroid Association in Kraków, Poland, September 10-14, 2011.
