Message from the Secretary

Dear LATS Member colleagues,

We are glad to welcome you to the June – July - August 2009 Newsletter.
Firstly we would like to share with you interesting information regarding the last activities of our Society.

As regards our XIII LATS meeting held in Gramado, Brazil, Dr. Ana Luiza Maia, President of the Organizing Committee has sent us further important news.
The net profit of the Congress was US $ 160,750. (one hundred sixty thousand, seven hundred fifty dollars).

The total number of participants was 1,415 (Germany 5, Argentina 89, Bolivia 2, Brazil 1200, Chile 25, Colombia 18, Denmark 1, Ecuador 24, United States 5, Mexico 14, Paraguay 4, Peru 16, United Kingdom 1, Switzerland 1, Uruguay 6, Venezuela 4).

We are very grateful to the Organizing and Scientific Committees for the hard work to reach a highly successful Meeting.
A special acknowledgement to Dr. Ana Luiza Maia for her efforts and dedication to our Meeting and for the excellent comment “Highlights of the XIII Latin American Thyroid Congress” published in THYROID 19 (7): 681, 2009.

We are pleased to let you know that the LATS Executive Committee has approved the proposal for Chihuahua, Mexico, as the venue of the 2011 LATS Congress.

The LATS Executive Committee has already designed the members of the Scientific Committee for the 2011 LATS Congress. The members designed are: Ana Orlandi (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Carmen C. Pazos Moura (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Francisco de Assis Rocha Neves (Brasilia, Brazil), Gabriela Brenta (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Gisah Amaral Carvalho (Curitiba, Brazil), Guillermo Juvenal (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Nelson Wohllk (Santiago de Chile, Chile), Edna T Kimura (São Paulo, Brazil), Ana Luiza Maia (Porto Alegre, Brazil), Mario Pisarev (Buenos Aires, Argentina).

We want to inform you that the Program Organizing Committee (POC) for the 14th International Thyroid Congress (ITC), which will be held in September 11-16, 2010 in Paris, France, had its last meeting in June 2009 in Paris. The LATS colleagues who represent our Society at the POC, Laura Ward, Denise Carvalho and Marcos Abalovich participated in the meeting which was chaired by Dr. Wilmar Wiersinga. The POC planned an attractive Scientific Programme involving 32 Symposia and 24 Meet the Expert Sessions as well as several Oral and Poster Debate Sessions. Online registration and abstract submission will open in November 2009. Regarding the activity of the International Coordinating Committee (ICC), the next ICC meeting will be held in Lisboa, Portugal, during the 34th Annual Meeting of the European Thyroid Association, 5-9 SEPTEMBER, 2009. The ICC meeting will be chaired by the ICC Coordinator, Dr. Hugo Niepomniszcze and attended by its members, namely the President and Secretary of the four sister Thyroid Societies, American Thyroid Association (ATA), European Thyroid Association (ETA), Asia-Oceania Thyroid Association (AOTA), and LATS. One of the main topics to be treated is the project of the creation of the World Thyroid Federation (WTF) that was proposed by Dr. Hugo Niepomniszcze in the previous ICC meeting in New York, 2007 and recently approved by the LATS General Assembly, 2009, and the other sister Societies.

We would like you to know that “Executive Council “ and “Awards” Sections on LATS web page have been updated with the new 2009-2011 LATS Executive Council elected at the 28th LATS General Assembly held during the XIII LATS Congress, 2009 in Gramado, Brazil and the Awards 2009, Young Investigator Winners, respectively. Information on meetings has been also added. Important coming meetings are listed on the front page. To make the “Directory” section more active and efficient, it is necessary to maintain LATS membership data actualized, mainly the respective e-mails, which are commonly changed. Please, check your data at the Directory and send an e-mail to the Secretary specifying the changes.
