Message from the President
March-April-May 2009
Dear LATS member colleagues,
It was very nice to meet many of you at the XIII LATS Congress that was held in Gramado, Brasil, from April 30th to May 3rd 2009.
Our Society is very proud of the success of the Meeting not only for the high scientific level but also for the very pleasant social activities in an atmosphere of friendship and cordiality. We must acknowledge the hard work and valuable effort of the Local Organizing Committee chaired by Dr. Ana Luiza Maia and the Scientific Committee coordinated by its chairman, Dr. Hans Graf.
The meeting was attended by 1415 colleagues, with a notable participation of young researchers in the diverse topics. The attractive Scientific Program included 7 Conferences (including the LATS Winner Prize), 6 Oral Sessions, 3 Basic and 3 Clinic, 13 Symposia (Basic and Clinic) and 5 Meet the Expert Sessions. From the 24 Oral Presentations, the two authors to receive Merck Young Investigator Prizes (One Clinic and other Basic) were chosen. As an innovation, two different Scientific Activities were added: Thyroid Debate (4) and Thyroid Poster Debate (4). The best abstracts presented as Posters were selected for oral discussion. 30 Travel Grants were distributed, 22 for Oral Session authors and 8 for the best Thyroid Poster Debate presentations.
Many interesting topics were discussed in the 28th General Assembly of LATS held during the XIII LATS Congress, on May, 2nd, 2009. Important decisions were taken to improve LATS rules.
A proposal from Dr. Ana Luiza Maia to change the voting process regarding the LATS Direction was accepted by the Assembly. Briefly, the modification includes the creation of an Electoral Committee and the nominationsof candidates for offices (President, President-elect, Secretary, and Directors) to the Electoral Committee at least forty days before the LATS Meeting. From the first day of the Meeting, ballots will be provided just for active members in good standing with the Society. LATS colleagues (in good standing) can vote on-line for the candidates of elective positions just after receiving from the Electoral Committee the names of the proposed candidates.
The activities of the Program Organizing Committee (POC) for the 14th ITC, 11-16 September 2010, Paris, France were commented by Dr. Denise Carvalho, one of the three members of the LATS POC for the 14th ITC.
The General Assembly approved the project of the creation of the World Thyroid Federation (WTF), which was presented by Dr. Hugo Niepomniszcze, Recording Secretary of the International Coordinating Committee (ICC).
A good number of new members of LATS (Active and Associate) since May 2007 were approved by the Assembly by unanimity. Our Society has been growing fast in the last years. However, the number of members who are in debt with the Society is very high and this question should be addressed by the new Executive Committee.
LATS Finance Balance presented by Dr. Eduardo Tomimori was approved by the General Assembly.
The assumption of Dr. Hans Graf, LATS President-Elect as LATS President was approved by the LATS assembly by unanimity. The suggestion of Dr. Marcos Abalovich´s name as LATS President-Elect for the period 2009-2011 received unanimous approval. The nine LATS members voted by the General Assembly to be part of LATS Executive Committee 2009-2011 were Claudia Pellizas (Córdoba), Egberto Moura (Rio de Janeiro) , Erivelto Volpi (São Paulo), Janete Cerutti (São Paulo), Laura Ward, (Campinas), Mario Vaisman (Rio de Janeiro), Mirta Corino (Buenos Aires), José Luiz Novelli (Rosario), Sonia Iorcansky (Buenos Aires).
The city of Chihuahua, Mexico was presented by Dr. Luis Mauricio Hurtado López, an active LATS member of Mexico as the city to hold the 14th LATS Meeting. This proposal will be analyzed by the Executive Committee.
Dr. Eduardo Pretell, of Peru, presented the more recent advances of the ICCIDD, which were approved by unanimity by the Assembly
