News from the Secretary

Message from the President
September/October 2008

Dear LATS colleagues,

We are glad to contact you to share some good news.

It gives us great pleasure to communicate you that we have a great number of registrations for our next XIII LATS Congress to be held in Gramado, Brazil, April 30 – May 3, 2009. Dr. Ana Luiza Maia, chair of the Local Organizing Committee has informed us that there are about 800 registrations already.

We would like to encourage everyone to participate actively in our coming XIII LATS Congress. We strongly recommend that you book hotel accommodation as early as possible because some hotels will become fully booked.

We would like to remind you that detailed information on the XIII LATS Meeting is available at the Congress site: www.lats2009.com.br. You can readily access it through the LATS website (www.lats.org). The Local Organizing Committee has made important progress in the meeting organization. The Scientific Committee, chaired by the LATS President-Elect, Hans Graf has developed an attractive scientific program. The preliminary scientific program as well as complete instructions on abstract submission have already been included on the Meeting website.

Let us note once again the early reduced registration fees (before October 30th, 2008) for the XIII LATS Congress 2009. As you can see in the meeting website, it has been established a clear difference between registration fees for LATS Members (in good standing ) and non-Members.

If you want to know about your financial situation, find out your account balance on Balance Statement section at LATS web page. Access Members Only and login your username and password. Then search for the option Balance Statement and your annual fee and balance will be displayed.

You can easily pay off your debt through LATS web page. Select Members Only, login your username and password and access Other Payments. Choose the payment option that you desire and fill out the requested information.

If you have forgotten your password access to the restricted area or have any other questions, please send an e-mail to Celia Lima at: calima@lats.org

We want to highlight some points about the XIII LATS Meeting:

 1. the deadline for abstracts submission is December 15th, 2008.

 2. the best oral presentations (Basic and Clinic) will be awarded with the Young Investigator Merck Prize (YIMP, Basic and Clinic) (2.000,00 USD each).

- Candidates (members of LATS) must have less than 40 years, present their paper as first authors at the Meeting and the work must have been made in full in a country of Latin America.

- Beside the regular abstract, candidates to the YIMP should send a three page summary of the work (Letter Times New Roman; size 12; 1.5 interline; letter size sheet), without any identification (Name and Institution). The YIMP will be chosen among 24 oral presentations (12 Basic and 12 Clinic)

- Candidates for the YIMP can not be in debt with the Society, otherwise their papers will not be submitted to it.

 3.  LATS is offering 30 Travel Grants (TG, 300.00 USD each) for LATS members. The conditions to apply for a TG are:

a. to be a member of LATS (not in debt)

b. to be younger than 40 years

c. to present the work at the XIII LATS Meeting, as first author

d. The work presented must have been done totally in Latin America.

Remember, you cannot apply for LATS Travel Grants and Young Prize as well as preferential discounts on registration fees if you are in debt with the Society.

With great pleasure we invite you to read the Editorial on “Thyroid Societies Across the World” published in the July 2008 issue of the Journal Thyroid. The presidents of the four world Thyroid Societies were invited to comment regarding each of the Societies by the Editor-in-Chief of Thyroid, Dr. Charles H. Emerson. The LATS president, Dr. Guillermo Juvenal highlighted the interests, organization and meetings of our Society. A particularly nice world map indicating the places for the next meetings of the four societies is displayed on the journal cover.

We are very pleased to let you know that the LATS president, Dr. Guillermo Juvenal has proposed the initiation of a Bibliographic update service for LATS members that will include outstanding papers on several aspects of interest to thyroidologists. Dr. Juvenal will prepare these files and they will be sent to you together with LATS Newsletters.

Please, find the LATS bibliographic service Nº 1 that is sent along with this Newsletter.
