Message from the Secretary

Dear LATS member colleagues,

Welcome to the July-August 2008 Newsletter.

We are very pleased to let you know about interesting information regarding the activity of our Society.

We are glad to communicate that you can find important news on the website for the next XIII LATS Congress in Gramado, Brazil, April 30 – May 3, 2009. The Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Dr. Ana Luiza Maia and the LATS President-Elect and chairman of the Scientific Committee, Hans Graf have been working hard on the meeting organization. The preliminary scientific programme has already been included on the website.

There will be a Pre-Congress Meeting, called Kocher Centennial Conference, celebrating 100 years of the Nobel Prize received by Dr. Kocher, directly related to Thyroid Surgery. This Meeting will focus on thyroid surgery with the participation of surgeons, thyroidologists and other specialists. It is being supported by the Brazilian Society of Head and Neck Surgery.

We would like to highlight some points about the XIII LATS Meeting:

1. the deadline for abstracts submission is December 15th, 2008.

2. the best oral presentations (Basic and Clinic) will be awarded with the Young Investigator Merck Prize (YIMP, Basic and Clinic) (2.000,00 USD each).

- Candidates (members of LATS) must have less than 40 years, present their paper as first authors at the Meeting and the work must have been made in full in a country of Latin America.

- Beside the regular abstract, candidates to the YIMP should send a three page summary of the work (Letter Times New Roman; size 12; 1.5 interline; letter size sheet), without any identification (Name and Institution). The YIMP will be chosen among 24 oral presentations (12 Basic and 12 Clinic)

- Candidates for the YIMP can not be in debt with the Society, otherwise their papers will not be submitted to it.

3. LATS is offering 30 Travel Grants (TG, 300.00 USD each) for LATS members. The conditions to apply for a TG are:

a. to be a member of LATS (not in debt)

b. to be younger than 40 years

c. to present the work at the XIII LATS Meeting, as first author

d. The work presented must have been done totally in Latin America.

Remember, you cannot apply for LATS Travel Grants and Young Prize as well as preferential discounts on registration fees if you are in debt with the Society.

The next LATS General Assembly is scheduled to take place during the XIII LATS meeting. One of the issues to be discussed in the Assembly will be the venue of the XIV LATS meeting in 2011. LATS members are invited to present a city/country for the XIV LATS Meeting at the Assembly. Regarding to this point, our bylaws dictate the following:

IX- LATS CONGRESS

Sec. 24. The LATS Congress will create the necessary conditions to get information, change of ideas and connections between the investigators involved on thyroid research.
Sec. 25. The meeting will be realized every two year in a Latin American city, except those years in which the International Thyroid Congress takes place. The Executive Committee may change the year and the city if it is necessary for any reason. The LATS Congress must not be realized simultaneously with other international meeting.
Sec. 26. The local organizing committee will be indicated by the LATS Executive Council and should be formed preferentially by LATS members living in the host country.
Sec. 27. The LATS Executive Committee will indicate the program organizing committee

We would like to comment that new Latin American and International Meetings as well as Documents are permanently included in the sections “Meetings” and “New”, respectively. Relevant coming meetings are listed at the front page.
