Message from the President
January/February 2008
Dear LATS Member colleagues,
We are glad to contact you to share some good news.
It is a great pleasure for us to welcome the new LATS members who have been accepted from the last LATS Assembly (May 2007) to February 2008 by the LATS Secretary to join our Society and whose approval must be ratified by the next 2009 assembly of LATS. They are 38 thyroidologists from Latin American countries: Brazil (20), Argentina (3), El Salvador (3), Perú (3), Chile (2), Ecuador (2), Bolivia (2), Colombia (1), Venezuela (1), and a Corresponding Member from Iran.
The new candidates who do not meet minimal requirements to become LATS Active Members will be firstly included as Associate Members and moved to Active Members when they fulfil the LATS rules (point III- MEMBERSHIP, Sec. 7).
We want to let you know that Dr. Eduardo K. Tomimori, LATS Treasurer, has informed that the LATS 2007 Balance is available on LATS web page (www.lats.org) at Balance Statements.
I would like to remind you that new information on meetings and documents is always added to the LATS web page, especially in “Meetings” and “New”. Important coming meetings are listed at the front page.
Recently we received from Michael Zimmermann, MD, the Editor of the Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) Newsletter, the February 2008 issue of the Newsletter. It will be on LATS web page at "New".
The American Thyroid Association (ATA) has informed that a new issue of Clinical Thyroidology (Volume XIX, Issue 3, November 2007) has been posted online by the at www.thyroid.org/professionals/publications/clinthy. This journal contains summaries and commentaries about recently published original research in thyroid physiology and disease.
We would like to thank all members that have regularized their debts with the Society and encourage those that are still in debt to enter LATS webpage and pay their Membership Dues. You can find the complete procedure to easily pay your fees in the previous LATS newsletter (November-December 2007).
We are very pleased to remind you that the Scientific Committee of the next XIII LATS Meeting that will be held in the city of Gramado, Brazil, April 30 – May 3, 2009, is working on the elaboration of the Scientific Program, coordinated by the President-Elect, Hans Graf. The already confirmed foreign speakers who will participate in our Meeting (Clinical and Basic areas) are John Lazarus (United Kingdom), Ralf Paschke (Germany), Richard Kloos (USA), Suzan Mandel (USA), Thomas S. Scanlan (USA) and Ulla Feldt-Rasmussen (Denmark),
Regarding the Journal “Thyroid”, LATS received 80 annual subscriptions for the Journal “Thyroid” through our Society (with the reduced price of 121,00 USD) and this is the number that Mary Ann Liebert Inc. Publishers actually will send to LATS. If there is still interest from other LATS members to get the Journal, we ask them to actualize their annual fees and ask for the Journal. In case LATS is going to have more 10 (ten) LATS members (not in debt with the Society) interested to get the Journal, we can ask Mary Ann Liebert to send us 90 copies instead of 80. But this must be done in the next three weeks.
Our best regards,
Guillermo Juvenal
