Message from the President
September/October - 2007

Dear LATS Member colleagues

We are very pleased to let you know on new important information regarding the last activities of our Society.

First of all, we would like to remind you that the next XIII LATS Meeting will be held in the city of Gramado, Brazil, April 30 – May 3, 2009. The Scientific Committee coordinated by the President-Elect, Hans Graf has started to work on the elaboration of the Scientific Program. There will be a balance among Clinical and Basic foreign speakers and in November 2007 our LATS members will be informed about our invited colleagues.

During the last LATS General Assembly, three LATS colleagues, Guillermo Juvenal, Hans Graf and Denise Carvalho were chosen to participate of the Program Organizing Committee (POC) for the 14th International Thyroid Congress (ITC), which will be held in September 11-16, 2010 in Paris, France. Since Guillermo Juvenal and Hans Graf, LATS President and President-Elect, respectively, declined because they are involved in diverse activities related to our Society, the LATS Executive Committee agreed to replace them by Laura Ward and Marcos Abalovich whose names had been proposed as substitutes.

Regarding the activity of the International Coordinating Committee (ICC), the last ICC meeting was held in New York, in the same venue of the 78th American Thyroid Association (ATA) Annual Meeting, on October 4th , 2007. The ICC meeting was chaired by the ICC Coordinator, Dr. Hugo Niepomniszcze and attended by its members, namely the President and Secretary of the four sister Thyroid Societies, ATA, European Thyroid Association (ETA), Asia-Oceania Thyroid Association (AOTA), and LATS . The main topics treated were:

1) the formal nomination of the Program Organizing Committee (POC) for the next 14th ITC. The POC is formed by twelve members, three for each of the four Thyroid Societies and includes a well-balanced blend of basic and clinical researchers and experts, as follows:

ATA: Antonio Bianco, Yaron Tomer, Steven I Sherman
ETA: Wilmar Wiersinga, Josef Köhrle, Sabine Costagliola
AOTA: Shunichi Yamashita, YoungKee Shong, Teofilo O.L. San Luis, Jr.
LATS: Denise Carvalho, Marcos Abalovich, Laura Ward

The first meeting of the POC was proposed by ETA members to be held in Paris on March 14th -15th, 2008, hosted by Profs. Schlumberger and Orgiazzi, co-chairs of the Local Organizing Committee.

2) It was informed by the ETA members that Dr. Wilmar Wiersinga was elected as Chairman of the POC for the ITC in Paris.

3) A new interesting proposal from Dr. Niepomniszcze to switch the ICC for the “World Thyroid Federation” was considered. This project was well received by the ICC members and will be analyzed by the Executive Council of each Thyroid Society.

We would like to comment that we continue to improve our LATS web page (www.lats.org) to make it more dynamic. Information on meetings and documents are permanently added in the sections “Meetings” and “New”. Relevant coming meetings are listed at the front page. To make the “Directory” section more active and efficient, it is necessary to maintain LATS membership data actualized, mainly the respective e-mails, which are commonly changed. Please, check your data at the Directory and send an e-mail to the Secretary specifying the changes. The section “Members Only”, which our LATS members can access with their respective “username and password”, will be up-grated in order to offer to our members, exclusive information about LATS activities.

Finally, we would like to emphasize the importance of the punctual payment of the membership dues to support our Society. Unfortunately, LATS Executive Council will have to impose sanctions on members who do not pay their debt.

Our best regards,

Guillermo Juvenal
 LATS President

Hans Graf
 LATS President-Elect

Ana Maria Masini-Repiso
 LATS Secretary

Eduardo Tomimori
