Dear LATS Member colleagues:

This is the first LATS Newsletter after our successful last XII LATS Meeting, which was held in Santiago del Chile, from April 27 to 30th, 2007.
All measures which were taken by the LATS Scientific and Social Committees proved to be the best for the success of our most important Meeting. It was a unique opportunity to improve our knowledge on different aspects of the Thyroid field, besides seeing again old friends and doing new friendships.
The XII LATS Scientific Committee (SC) received 173 abstracts for the XII LATS Meeting, which were carefully analyzed by the SC. From the twelve Oral Presentations (Six Basic and six Clinical), the two Merck Young Investigator Prizes (MYIP) were chosen. From the other 161 abstracts presented as Posters, the best ones were chosen for Oral Discussion. There were 586 inscriptions, with a very strong participation of young investigators. LATS offered 45 Travel Grants (TG), directed to participants who fulfilled the conditions for the MYIP or TG. We are very thankful for the Local Organizing Committee, under the leadership of Nelson Wohllk, our last LATS President, which did all the efforts for holding a very well organized and successful Meeting.
During the LATS General Assembly, important decisions were made. The most important ones, was regarding changes in LATS by-laws. The LATS members, who participated at the General Assembly accepted the suggestion of our former Secretary-Treasurer, Dr. Antonio Bianco, to split the position of LATS Secretary-Treasurer in two different positions: a) Secretary and b) Treasurer. The Assembly voted for the four directorship positions, President, President-Elect, Secretary and Treasurer, which were filled respectively by Guillermo Juvenal, Hans Graf, Ana Maria Masini-Repiso and Eduardo Tomimori. The other 9 members of the Executive Committee were voted and are Ana Luiza Maia, Edna T. Kimura, Fabian Pitoia, Janete Cerutti, Alicia Lowenstein, Denise Carvalho, Carmen Cabezón, Graciela Alcaraz and Francisco Neves respectively.

The Executive Committee chose the city of Gramado, Brazil, for hosting the next XIII LATS Meting in 2009 and also the new Scientific Committee (2007-2009), in charge of the Scientific Program of the LATS Meeting: Hans Graf (President), Lea Z. Maciel, Liliana Bergoglio, Marcos Abalovich, Maria Tereza Nunes, Mario Pisarev, Nelson Wohllk, Rosa Paula de Mello Biscola and Tania Ortiga. Three Latin American colleagues, Guillermo Juvenal, Laura Ward and Denise Carvalho were chosen to participate of the Program Organizing Committee (POC) of the next 14th International Thyroid Congress, which will be held in Paris, 2010.

The number of new LATS members have been growing fastly during the last years, mainly at the last two years. The partnership with other Societies, like the Societies of Neck and Head Surgery, Nuclear Medicine and Basic Sciences has contributed to these number of new members. The challenge of the new Executive Committee is to diminish the number of members who are in debt with the Society.

We would like to remember all our LATS colleagues, that our site www.lats.org, supported by Merck (Darmstadt, Germany), together with our Newsletters are the main communication source for all of us. Important Latin American and International Meetings should be publicized through our site. One of the important Endocrine Meetings which will be held in Latin America is the XIII International Congress of Endocrinology, which will be held in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from November 8-12th, 2009.

Looking forward to see you all very soon

Guillermo Juvenal – LATS President

Hans Graf – LATS President –Elect

Eduardo Tomimori – LATS Treasurer
