Message from the President
April, 2007
XII LATIN AMERICAN THYROID SOCIETY CONGRESS
Dear Colleagues and Friends:
On behalf of the Directors and Scientific and Local Committees, I am pleased to welcome you to Santiago and to the LATS's 12th Congress. We trust you will find the Congress an important professional experience that truly furthers LATS' goals of advancing understanding of the thyroid gland while increasing professional cooperation across national borders.
Thanks to the efforts of the Scientific Committee, under the leadership of its president Doctor Guillermo Juvenal. This 12th Congress will offer you a stimulating program. In conferences, symposia, and special topics sessions, invited international speakers and Society members will address themes of general interest as well as new and emerging issues.
We will also offer two pre-Congress courses: the first--Molecular Basis of Thyroid Physiology--is addressed to residents in Endocrinology and Internal Medicine and professionals in the basic sciences. The second is addressed to medical specialists who wish to deepen their understanding of Thyroid Ultrasound.
Continuing two recent traditions, this year we will name the winner, selected by the Scientific Committee, of the Young Investigator Prize, sponsored by Merck KGaA. We will also recognize an outstanding Society member for contributions on both local and international levels to our understanding of the thyroid gland.
Organization of a Congress of this magnitude has been possible only with the dedication and commitment of many. I wish to express sincere gratitude to the speakers and to the members of the Scientific Committee for their generous contributions of time and effort so as to ensure a successful and meaningful program. Deep thanks also to the Local Committee and special appreciation goes to our Secretary-Treasurer, Dr. Hans Graf, for his immeasurable contributions. I also thank our sponsors for their support in making the Congress a reality.
As you already know from LATS previous Newsletters, our LATS General Assembly is scheduled for April 29th (Sunday) at 19h30 PM. You are strongly invited to participate at this Assembly, which gives to LATS our directions for the future.
One of the important points of our Assembly schedule is the discussion of amendments/modifications of LATS bylaws that the LATS Secretary-Treasurer Hans Graf received from two our colleagues. These bylaw changes propositions you will find below. I suggest you to print them in order to analyze them in advance.
Candidates to Travel Grants , as already detailed in our previous Newsletters, are asked to look for the LATS booth at the XII Meeting, to let the following documents with one of our LATS secretaries, Celia or Claudia. 1: Xerox of the abstract (oral or poster) as it appears at the XII LATS Meeting Program; 2: ID copy and 3: A statement of the Institution of origin, regarding their status (professor, researcher, postgraduate student, graduate student, etc)
Again, welcome to Santiago , and enjoy the Congress.
Best regards
Nelson Wohllk – LATS President
Guillermo Juvenal – LATS President –Elect
Hans Graf – LATS Secretary-Treasurer
