Message from the President
December, 2004

Dear LATS Members

In a few weeks we will be in 2005!

In the name of the whole LATS Executive Council, I wish you Happy Holidays and a great New Year. May our countries prosper and hold together. As the Old Man said  “a rod is easy to break, but not so a pack of rods bound together”.

The New Year will bring the 13th International Thyroid Congress – the meeting that allows interchange among Thyroidologists from the 5 Continents and that happens only once every 5 years. This time LATS is the host organization, and you will find all pertinent informations through the LATS home-page www.lats.org. Keep yourself informed! By the way, there is a very interesting “first” related to registration values for early registrants. Look it up, you may be agreeably surprised!

As in our previous Congresses, the LATS Prize will be awarded to a member of the Latin-American Thyroid Society who has made outstanding contributions to thyroid research over a considerable period. Nominations for the LATS Prize will be open until Monday, February 28, 2005. According to the LATS Rules (Sec.28-31, q.v.), candidates for the LATS Prize may be proposed and seconded by any two active members of LATS. The proposal should be sent to the Secretary-Treasurer, and include the candidate's curriculum vitae (no more than 10 pages) and a summary (no more than 2 pages) of the candidate's personal contribution to thyroid research in our countries. Remember that the LATS Prize is an once-in-a-lifetime award.

The Young Investigator LATS Prizes – Clinical Research and Basic Research – will also be awarded to two young members of the Society (less than 40 years of age) selected among those presenting their work, in person and as first authors. The research work presented must have been fully made in a country of Latin America. The Young Investigator LATS Prizes also are once-in-a-lifetime awards.

Our Secretary-Treasurer informs us that LATS will be able to offer about 30 Travel Grants to young LATS associated investigators (conditions as for the Young Investigator LATS Prizes). More information will be given in due time.

N.B.: If you, or your fellow, would like to apply for these prizes/grants, remember that the selection will be made among the active members only. (Take care, applications from members in debt with LATS will not be accepted!)

Good News 1: I am very happy to inform you that The National Academy of Clinical Chemistry (USA) has granted us the permission to display the English and Spanish versions, in pdf format, of Laboratory Support for the Diagnosis and Monitoring of Thyroid Disease, edited by Laurence M. Demers and Carole A. Spencer, on the LATS website. The Spanish version of the Laboratory Support for the Diagnosis and Monitoring of Thyroid Disease monograph, that includes some adaptations to our conditions in Latin-America, is due to the efforts of our associate Liliana Bergoglio from Cordoba, Argentina. Dr. Liliana Bergoglio's contribution widens the usefullnes of the Monograph, and we here we wish to acknowledge her collaboration. You will find the Guidelines in the box "New" and you´ll be able to consult/download this monograph, free of charge. NACB routinely updates its Laboratory Medicine Practice Guidelines and the most up-to-date versions of these documents can be found on the Academy website at www.nacb.org.

Good News 2: The LATS home-page sponsorship by Merck has been renewed for 2005

My very best wishes to all of you, extensive to your families. We’ll have more news in the next Newsletter… next year. Until then,

                        Prosit!  Cheers!  Chin,Chin!  Salud!  Saúde!

       Yours,

          Doris Rosenthal

          Letter of the LATS Secretary-Treasurer

           Dear LATS Members:

Joining our LATS President, I would like to wish to all our members the best in 2005. The organization of the 13th International Thyroid Congress is LATS most important challenge in 2005 and we count upon all LATS members for the success of the meeting.

We renewed the special subscription rates for the 2005 Thyroid Journal, with Mary Ann Liebert . The  subscription value will be maintained at US$110.00 and of course includes online access and printed form for all 12 issues.

LATS has increased the payments choices for his members. Now you can use VISA, American Express, Mastercard or Dinners cards to pay the annual Membership Dues and Thyroid Subscription, all with a safety look. In order to facilitate the payments of members who are in debt with the Society, we are offering the possibility to parcel the debt. The link for both active and associate members is: www.lats.org/bin/members/payform.asp .

We wish a happy Christmas and a fruitful 2004 to all.

          Hans Graf

          LATS Secretary-Treasurer
